Hike from Lukla to Mount Everest Base Camp

    By HikingOn | April 17, 2009

I would like to send all my condolences out to the families of the 10/08/2008 Yeti Airlines crash victims. First of all: excuse the poor music, please! This video shows (the flight to and) the trek from Lukla (2800 metres) to Mt. Everest basecamp (5300 metres) and Kala Pattar (5600 metres) in Khumbu Himal, Nepal. It’s a combination of film footage and photos. I went there in Spring 2006.

ringrave100 I wish your expedition the best of luck I have just returned from Nepal where we did the same trek that is seen in the video it was truely amazing our expedition consisted of 12 cadets from LNR ACF and 6 Adult instructors as well as mountain leaders and guides. You will find it a true experience and I wish you all the best of luck. Remember to ascend slowly it really makes a difference.

very nice video, it should be longer for me :)
i love the way you mix it with your beautiful photographs.

I also plan ti visit Nepal and do some trek there.
I plan to go in Spring (but i haven’t booked plane ticket yet), Does spring quite good there to photographs of the mountain view(clear sky, nice sunrise, beautiful sunset)?
Or will it be better on autumn?

Spring should be fine. I went there in February/March and the pictures speak for themselves I guess, plus you won’t meet too many people on the trek. Nevertheless you should have the best views in early autumn, i.e. in October and November after monsoon. Bad thing it’s really crowdy there around that time of the year. Most people go there in autumn, so it’s up to you and what you prefer…extremely nice views & crowded lodges or very nice views and empty lodges ;-) I recommend early spring time!

      brings back memories.

no doubt one of the most fascinating journies i’ve ever done, trekking peaks Gokyo Ri + Kala Pattar, and Ev Base camp.

i just returned to kathmandu exactly 1 year ago.

doing this in the middle of a himalayan winter was no doubt physically and mentally challenging….on top of being frozen, but i recommend it especially when there’s only a handful of fellow tourists.

it is really humlbing to see the sherpa people prosper in such brutal environmental conditions.

I’m going in October 2009 – just a spur of the moment booking !!!

I am SO excited as well.

I too worry about will I be okay, I’m going for 19days.

I’m gonna treat myself to a nice digital camera and take some nice shots, hopefully !!

How fit should you be do you reckon ??

Like, able to run a half marathon type fit ??

That’s quite difficult to answer. Certainly, being in good shape is not the worst idea you can have before setting off to such a trip. Nevertheless: don’t exaggerate. Personally I did not prepare at all by doing a lot of sports and did quite well during the trek. When it comes to feeling good in high altitude it’s much more important to ascend slowly and not to gain more than 300 or 400 metres a day. Plus you need to allow some resting days in between your ascend and everything should be fine.

Most of the pictures were taken with a Nikon F80 and a 28-300 mm lens. I scanned them from slides, so the quality is actually not that good. The video footage was taken with a simple digital photo camera, nothing special.

I’m sorry, I can’t remember the name of the song since I took it from a website with license-free music. But you can easily convert this track into mp3 using free converters. Just google it.

If you think you are fit, then double your regime and get even fitter !!
I went to Base Camp in May 2008. I’ve played 600 football matches; am a fitness coach and personal trainer (although I’m late 40′s). And it was extrememly harsh.
Oxygen is 50% of what we have in UK. Plus dodgy food, bad stomach, lack of sleep (mostly my snoring on others).
Brilliant tho’ and am going back in May 2010. Here I am 10 months on and still daydreaming and pinching myself; did I do it?!!!
