How late in the year can Mount Elbert be climbed without snow equipment?

    By HikingOn | April 17, 2009

My Fall Break is October 8-14 this year. My friends and I would like to climb Mount Elbert in Colorado. Can the mountain be hiked that late in the year (without ice axe, crampons, etc.)?

I've done Longs Peak at about the same time of year – although it did snow a little (and there was snow on the mountain), we did not need crampons and ice axes to do it. I did Elbert in the fall too, but I think it was in late Sept.

You might be able to do it – watch the weather between now and then and watch for storms coming through the area that might dump snow on the peak. Check weather.com for conditions around Leadville for the forecast before you go. Call the Ranger station in Leadville for current conditions.

Be prepared for snow or be prepared to turn back if you encounter conditions you are not prepared for.
