First, you make sure that they are really and truly dead and not just unconscious or in some sort of coma.

Then you drag the body to an open area or to an area where there is some sort of natural formation that you can easily recognize again or that can be easily located by rangers or anyone familiar with the area.

Next, you make a barrier around the body with rocks, and you cover the body with medium size rocks so animals don't scavenge their remains. You don't want to be the one explaining to the authorities why all they ever found was your friends left foot and belt buckle three miles from where you said this all happened.

Burying your friend is a bad idea, as you won't be able to bury them deep enough using only your hands or small tools to prevent animals from digging them up before you can get back with the authorities. It's probably legal, but it really isn't a very bright idea.

Carrying your friend back would be next to impossible, as dead weight is much harder to carry than a live person. And if you have to travel back for so long that rigor would begin to set in, it would be absolutely impossible. A noble gesture in thought, but next to impossible in reality. Unless your dead friend is a very light dwarf, this simply isn't going to happen.

Then you turn back and go get help.
