Have you ever gone hiking with someone you met only online?

Once I got kicked off a forum because I asked, "What about the gay?", because everyone there was "hooking up" to go hiking, and it seemed really awkward to me. I don't think I could ever meet up to hike with someone I met online. What kind of people do that?
