My permit reservation came through for Mount Whitney on August 12th! Thanks for this video. I’m glad to see all the fantastic scenery I have in store!

It was filmed in October 2003 just before the first snow arrived.

I believe the 13 mile road you’ve heard of is the one from Lone Pine up to Whitney Portal Trailhead (el. 8365ft) And that is the nearest you can get with a car. From there on it’s hiking only; some 10.7 miles up to the 14.496 foot summit.

Up from Lone Pine does sound familiar,so you’re probably right.Hadn’t seen any maps or tried going yet,so I wasn’t sure.I guess I was hoping it’d be more like Mt.Wilson.

Thank you for the inspiring video. I am going to do this next summer.

So, this is what I missed trying to take it the hard way with a stubborn Navy Captain and a Marine Colonel, who both lacked the foresight to realize that you do it the easy way first.

Typical officers.

I’ve been up there a few times, another time is coming up July 16th 07, can’t wait to go back, it’s a different world in a matter of a few hrs.

Great .. Just as I remembered it, except we had deep snow on the switchbacks in July.1987

A road to the top !!! You’re thinking of Pikes Peak no?
November 6th, 2007 at 4:45 am
No,it was something I’d read about Whitney,in the early 80′s.I believe hikealongpete set me straight.I’d read about a road leading up from Lone Pine, that would get you within short hiking distance of the summit.Compared to hiking all the way from Lone Pine, driving half way, first, would make the 10.7 mile remainder of the trip just a short hike.

Yes Taranau, hikealongpete was spot on, his video is excellent too, exactly as I remembered our trip except we had deep snow above Trail Camp.
Most people make this a two day exercise, staying overnight at Trail Camp on the way up, then early start next morning, making the summit before noon then all the way down to their vehicle at Whitney Portal.
Don’t underestimate this trail — none technical, but it is a long hard day. Not much shade either!
Go for it and good luck.

WOW!!!

I did it from the east face in ’77 when I was a Marine at Pendleton. You see all that walk up west stuff on the trail out. The east face is the only way to climb Whitney. I loved it because the retreat was so easy after such a long approach. Up in 2 days, down in 3 hours.

Thanks for posting this video. Nice to know what the trail is like. I am going to hike Whitney this summer along with Shasta and Rainier. The perfect summer Trifecta! Keep posting great videos like this one.

Nice video. I once hiked near Bishop Pass and wish to do something similar again. This hike seems more challening though. I’d like to try it! Thanks for posting this video HikeAlongPete!!!

Thanks for uploading this. I will be doing this hike (climb) this coming September and this is a great preview–kind of like a “hike simulator.”
