For safety, hiking with one or more people is the best way to go. But if you run into the same situation I do most of the time finding anyone with the same schedule Can be difficult to say the least. Most times I go hiking and biking by my self, though I make my plans known to my family, carry a phone (most places they are useless) and other safety equipment. And to be honest sometimes I really in joy the silence and solitude I find when i am by myself.
As far as getting into condition – start out with some short easy hikes. Make sure you take good care of your feet, nothing worse than getting 5 or 6 from the end and getting a blister. keep increasing the frequency and difficulty until your able to handle any trail you want.
