How can you tell if a pair of hiking boots are made for carrying heavier loads and mountainering?

For instance if you were at a yard sale, or a flea market and you were looking at the boots and the seller had no information about they're purpose of use.

See how flexible the shank is- that's part thru the heel and arch. A heavy pair of boots would likely be very stiff thru here. It may even have a piece of steel there to keep the shoe from flexing under load.
