How dangerous is hitch-hiking?

I'm looking for statistics that compare the fatality/danger of hitch-hiking with other activities, to see if the fear of it is really warranted.

Dangerous because you can fall off a cliff and die or get your had stuck in a hole but it is fun but dangerous .
