    What is a good 10 mile-ish hiking trail in northern California?

    My wife has never been backpacking, so i am looking for a dog friendly trail around 10 miles long for a overnight trip. i was hoping for something that eliminates at a lake or river`so we have something to hike to. We live near Sacramento.

      The trail to the three Loch Leven Lakes in El Dorado NF is a good 7.2 mile round trip backpacking route with plenty of dog lovers, about 75 miles up HWY80 from Sacramento. Download a pdf brochure of the trail details here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/tahoe/documents/rec/LochLevenROG.pdf

      Another option is the myriad trails in Desolation Wilderness west of Lake Tahoe. Desolation does permit dogs at this time and the leash laws only apply if the dog is harassing people or wildlife, at least according to this: http://www.explorer1.com/tahoe/desolation-general.htm The route to Mt. Tallac from the end of Fallen Leaf Lake is 11 miles round trip, with beautiful, secluded Gilmore Lake only 1.5 miles downhill from the summit. http://www.tahoebackcountry.net/hiking/desolation/tallac.htm
